ENDURANCE ADVENTURE COMPONENT 1: Developing Emotionally Intelligent Leaders Research has demonstrated that Emotional Intelligence is more than 85% of what sets star performers from the average. The higher the level of a job’s complexity and authority, the greater the position will impact the organization. Although all the standardized tests focus on academic achievement, our students are lacking what Daniel Golman refers to as Emotional Intelligence. Since WWII our countries IQ average has risen by 24 points, yet our population seems to be struggling more than ever with depression, anxiety, motivation, self-management techniques, etc. Simply stated, our students are prepared intellectually for positions of complexity and authority, yet sorely lacking the Emotional Intelligence to become a “star performer.” Session activity success will be built to rely on the application of emotional intelligence components. The following is from Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman with some adaptations.
Although the activities to increase Emotional Intelligence incorporated a physical task, preparing for an Adventure Race requires sessions which speak directly to the need for endurance, strength, and sharp intellect for orienteering. We will be combining the tasks of biking, running, and isolated strength exercises for the “Endurance” portion of the competition.
